Innovative Use of NLIS Technology
Rockhampton, QLD, February 13th, 2007- AgInfoLink, a global traceability solution provider, recently launched a new facet to its business in Australia by offering contract management recording. By using existing NLIS hardware, AgInfoLink are able to deliver meaningful results on the performance of individual animals without the requirement for expertise or equipment from the producer.
AgInfoLink was founded in 1997 and has been delivering individual animal management solutions to Australia’s northern beef industry since 1998. With a focus on collecting information, while still working at the speed of commerce, AgInfoLink are one of the few companies that bring the full gamut of hardware and software to the industry. With many years of experience in delivering solutions to remote station country, AgInfoLink have sourced and designed the very best rugged solutions that are installed with confidence in any environment.
From the company’s inception, the focus has been on the collection, consolidation and transmission of information up and down the supply chain as cattle move from breeding, backgrounding, finishing to slaughter. In recent years the business focus broadened with AgInfoLink becoming a founding partner in Livestock Link who are the market-leading pre-sale scanning service provider in the Australian livestock industry. They now operate at over 20 saleyards including the largest three in the country.
With the advent of mandatory NLIS, AgInfoLink had long considered providing data collection as a service but it wasn’t until approached by a significant pastoral entity that it became a reality. AgInfoLink were already an industry leader in the manufacture of easy to use software, rugged RFID readers and push-of-a-button data entry solutions so it was a logical progression to provide these services on a contract basis.
Services provided are customised to the client but usually involve the collection of growth or fertility information as well as NLIS transfers. Reports are also customised to the clients’ requirements in order to tease out the factors effecting key performance indicators such as kilograms of beef produced per hectare or weight of calf weaned per 100-kilogram cow joined. By collecting attributes on the individual animal such as sex, breed, property of origin, month of birth etc the relationship between these and say weight gain can be assessed allowing conclusions to be drawn.
“We offer a complete service where all the client needs to do is work the cattle through the yards and AgInfoLink does the rest. It is a great way of seeing what can be achieved with NLIS technology, without the upfront investment” Don Menzies, AgInfoLink Client Services Manager.
John Morris of "Tallawalah" at St Lawrence recently began using the services of AgInfoLink. The Tallawalah aggregation comprises Tallawalah and the adjoining property of Bujeri. John recently secured a client to agist a large number of steers at Bujeri that are being backgrounded for the feedlot market.
AgInfoLink have been contracted by John Morris to weigh and record cattle at induction and exit so that days on feed and weight gain can be calculated. A performance bonus is paid to John Morris on premium weight gains. AgInfoLink provides precise and impartial third party performance recording.
"We wanted a system where we are rewarded for managing the cattle to their optimum growth potential. By monitoring the growth of individual animals and identifying the best performers we are rewarded as well as the owner - it is a win/win for both parties" John Morris, Tallawalah
AgInfoLink also provides data collection services to Rural Management Partners (RMP) who manage a breeding and fattening herd on Tallawalah.
A core objective of AgInfoLink is to pull information from the different segments of the beef supply chain thereby providing whole of life “value” traceability. This enables clients to easily comply with marketing initiatives that may require age, source, or treatment verification on an individual animal basis. Continuing the theme of supply chain information, AgInfoLink give a guarantee to be able to import carcase data in any format from any abattoir. Once the carcase feedback is obtained from the abattoir, customised reports are generated that analyse compliance to specification and link to live animal attributes.
AgInfoLink are fulfilling a role in the beef industry that few other companies could achieve. It is an example of NLIS technology providing real solutions for beef producers rather than just compliance costs. The result is the producer is provided with meaningful information on the performance of their herd, which is knowledge when making decisions rather than guesswork.
